2007-2008 Newsletter
Welcome!
I hope that all returning students had a restful yet fun-filled summer. For those who are new to dance (or new to us :-), welcome to The Academy. For those who are considering attending The Academy, please feel free to stop by and view/try a class anytime.

The Dance Year

The Academy Dance Year is divided into THREE REGULAR SESSIONS (not including Summer): Fall (September - December), Winter (January - March), and Spring (April - June). The year concludes with our Annual Concert, held at the Coolidge Corner Theater; all students are invited to perform!!!

Important: Tuition is due the first two weeks of each session. This means there are three separate tuition / session payments throughout the year.
For example, if you are joining during the Fall session, you will pay for that session in September 2007; you will pay for the Winter session in January 2008, and the Spring session in April 2008. This is our own 'built-in payment plan.'

PLEASE NOTE: Once children/teens are signed up and settled into their classes, tuition is due within two weeks. We appreciate your understanding and compliance.

Auditions
Auditions are held once a year during the first two weeks of the Fall session for all performance companies. Those who audition for Company will be placed by the third week of classes, and their tuition should be paid by the third week.
Dates for 2008 auditions are TBA. Auditioning Companies are: ACADEMY DANCERS, SENIOR COMPANY, JUNIOR COMPANY, and KIDS COMPANY. Be ready to do a full warm-up, across the floor and center work in addition to learning a piece of choreography. Helpful items: bottle of water, towel, hair ties, etc, in your dance bag.

Looking Forward
Costume Deposit and Balance / Annual June Concert
A $40 costume deposit is due in December 2007/January 2008. The costume balance is due during the Spring session (April). The balance amount depends upon the total cost of the dancer's costume/s. All students/guardians must inform the teacher whether or not they will be participating in the Annual June Concert. Guardians must sign and return the form with their payment and confirmation.

14th Annual Dance-a-Thon!
The entire student body is encouraged to participate in a fun-filled day of dance, laughter and sharing (March 2008). The money raised goes directly to the "Dollars for Dancers" scholarship fund (10% of the total raised goes to The Hospice House). This enables dancers of all ages to share the joy of dance regardless of their ability to pay. Dance-A-Thon packets will be distributed at the beginning of February 2008.

Master Classes
The Academy hosts several master classes in a variety of styles throughout the dance year. These classes are for the high intermediate to advanced dancers (Check with your teacher if appropriate). Master class dates, instructors' bios, and class descriptions are available on the schedule page. Look for the sign up sheet located at the entrance of the dressing room.

Community Service/Outreach
Several events and collections of charitable goods occur throughout the dance year. These events range from dancing at a Children's Home, volunteering at a soup kitchen to visiting residents at a local nursing home. The collections are sent to organizations that include Red Cross, homeless shelters and the like. This year we will most likely focus on helping the homeless individuals and families in the Boston Area.

Our Door is Always Open
Please do not hesitate to address your questions, concerns, or compliments to me, your teacher, or any of the staff here at The Academy. We are always striving to be better. Your continued feedback will only help.

I look forward to another amazing and productive dance year and can't wait to see your smiling faces in class!

Always yours in dance,
Mellissa Taylor (Wells)
